Lakeland Community CollegeDiagnosed at the age of six with Tourette Syndrome, a neurobehavioral disorder, Jeff Matovic grew up experiencing unpredictable jerking motions, muscle tics and spasms. Medication helped, but by his mid 20's, the spasms worsened and the medications became less effective.
Jeff consulted University Hospitals of Cleveland neurologist Brian N. Maddux, MD, PhD, and neurosurgeon Robert Maciunas, MD, and in February 2004 began operations to implant electrodes deep inside his brain to control the symptoms. In March, this technique called Deep Brain Stimulation, was "turned on" and his tics disappeared! This successful procedure received worldwide media attention. Jeff appeared on Good Morning America and the Oprah Show, publicizing the procedure that gave him back his life and gave an option to others suffering from brain disorders like Tourette's and Parkinson's Disease.
